How can disinformation campaigns be identified?

Disinformation campaigns can often be identified by looking for several warning signs. These include fake or automated accounts (bots), which are accounts controlled by software instead of a real person. They often have little or no profile information, profile pictures that appear to be AI-generated, or unusual posting patterns, such as posting continuously throughout the day and night. Other signs include multiple accounts posting the exact same message and the same story appearing across different platforms or in different languages. It's also important to understand who posted the content first, who is helping spread it, and what their goal is.

Another warning sign is a sudden change in the way existing accounts behave. For example, accounts that have spent months posting about sports, music, or entertainment may suddenly begin sharing political content or posting about a major event. Once the event is over, they often return to their usual content to continue building followers and appear like normal users. A sudden shift like this can be a sign that the account is being used as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign.

No single sign proves that a campaign is coordinated, but when several of these signs appear together, it's a strong reason to investigate further.
